At Tariff, we’ve long been committed to helping businesses and individuals achieve net-zero energy and environmental impact. Over time, we’ve realised that addressing carbon alone is only part of the picture. Nature itself, the ecosystems that sustain life is under increasing pressure. This is where Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) comes in.
“Biodiversity Net Gain” (BNG) is a policy framework introduced in England under the Environment Act 2021. According to the official Government guidance, BNG ensures that a development leaves the natural environment in a measurably better state than it was before.
In practical terms: a developer must deliver at least 10% more biodiversity (in value) than existed before the project, as measured by a standardised metric.
Put simply: rather than simply “doing no harm”, BNG means your project must produce a net positive outcome for nature.
We’re deeply familiar with net-zero commitments and carbon offsetting. Biodiversity Net Gain is a natural extension of that mission. While decarbonisation addresses the climate, BNG ensures that our operations also support thriving ecosystems.
We believe that protecting and enhancing biodiversity isn’t just an ethical responsibility, it’s essential for the resilience of our environment and communities.
At Tariff, we provide two key ways for businesses and individuals to contribute to BNG:
By offering these solutions, we help our clients meet regulatory obligations, contribute to ecosystem recovery, and demonstrate leadership in environmental stewardship.
BNG is becoming increasingly important in development and infrastructure planning in England. Here’s why it matters:
Regulatory compliance: Mandatory for many developments under current law, with requirements phased in for smaller sites from April 2024.
Environmental impact: Supports restoration and enhancement of habitats, creating measurable, long-term ecological benefits.
Stakeholder expectations: Investors, clients, and communities increasingly demand nature-positive practices.
Corporate reputation: Businesses integrating BNG demonstrate leadership in sustainability and ESG performance.
BNG projects also bring co-benefits, such as improving pollination, water management, flood mitigation, and community green spaces.
BNG can be delivered through three main approaches:
On-site habitat creation or enhancement – improving biodiversity directly within the project boundary.
Off-site habitat creation – supporting projects on other land where space or conditions make on-site gains difficult.
Purchase of statutory biodiversity credits – a verified route to meet BNG obligations when other methods are not feasible.
All BNG initiatives require long-term management, typically for at least 30 years, to ensure gains are sustained and legally compliant.
BNG offers an opportunity for companies, developers, and individuals to actively improve biodiversity, while also aligning with broader net-zero and sustainability goals. Whether through on-site habitat creation or purchasing verified credits and units via Tariff, every contribution counts.
As we continue to help businesses reduce their carbon footprint, we’re equally committed to supporting measurable improvements in biodiversity, ensuring our environmental strategy addresses both climate and nature.
